InterContinental ANA Beppu Resort & Spa, Japan
This new hotel marks one of the first international hotel openings in the sleepy Oita Prefecture, home to the biggest area of hot springs in Japan. The sanctuary-like rooms feature bamboo décor made by local artists. Unsurprisingly, the onsen facilities are top-notch: there’s an open-air bath, built with Japanese cypress and Beppu stone, that overlooks Beppu Bay. The local hot springs water is believed to have cleansing qualities for the skin. Within driving distance from the hotel are the 'hells baths' – a range of natural hot springs in ominous colours.
