The country pub scene on a Friday night in Sussex felt familiar: a pretty garden with locals winding down, real ale and G&T in hand; a backdrop of buttercups and violets under aquamarine skies; the warm, early evening sun throwing a copper haze over the fields, hills and woodland beyond.  

The difference is I’m not going in for a pint of ‘Spring Magic’ – at least, not yet – as I’m standing in a circle of strangers, in the car park, it’s 7pm and we’re all in running shorts and trainers. Before you can say “hearty meals and a selection of fine wines”, Sam, our trail guide, takes the group off in the opposite direction. “Let’s go!”, he says.
