Location

8 / 10

Unless you’re craving a Grand Canal view or proximity to St Mark’s, the Locanda San Barnaba is pretty ideally placed. It’s a bridge-free stroll from the Ca’ Rezzonico vaporetto stop where the Alilaguna airport service also ties up. There’s a private water entrance if you opt for a taxi. It’s in a lively restaurant-packed part of the lovely Dorsoduro district. And it’s within easy walking distance of many major sights.

Style & character

8 / 10

Run by the same family that has owned this palazzo since it was built in the 16th century, the San Barnaba is distinguished, friendly and lovingly maintained. With its beautifully frescoed salon, plant-filled courtyard and simple, comfortable rooms – some with frescoed ceilings – the feel is elegantly classic.

Service & facilities

8 / 10

Owners and staff are wonderfully welcoming and professional, and are always as happy helping to haul luggage up the stairs (there’s no lift) as recommending great restaurants and sharing their Venetian knowledge. There’s a pretty garden courtyard with a view over a canal, a stately frescoed living room on the piano nobile and a little roof terrace.

Rooms

8 / 10

The 13 rooms are large (for Venice); décor is simple and traditional, but immaculately clean and very well-appointed. In some rooms, the ceilings still have their 18th-century frescoes. There are two two-level junior suites, one of which has delightful private balconies overlooking a small canal and the hotel’s garden. Some classic doubles are on the second floor under the eaves with no lift – a challenge for anyone with mobility problems. Bathrooms are neat and modern.

Food & drink

7 / 10

Served in the ground-floor dining room or outside in the garden courtyard, the breakfast is generous and fresh, with a reasonable choice of goodies. A small bar sells well-priced drinks through the day.

8 / 10

Double rooms from €120 (£108) in low season; and from €175 (£150) in high. Breakfast included. Free Wi-Fi.

Rooms of this standard usually come with daunting price tags in high season, but this Locanda keeps tariffs surprisingly low throughout the year
