Bologna's restaurant scene is thriving. New places are opening constantly and there's an increasingly Mediterranean feel around town. Pavement tables, street food and seafood restaurants are on the up and greater attention is being paid to quality produce and low food miles; vegetable-based dishes and wines from the hills surrounding Bologna are finally holding their own on menus.
Pride of place still goes to the rich local cuisine, however, and pasta in particular – the official recipes for 31 typical dishes (including tortellini and tagliatelle) are registered by notary, and no Bologna restaurant worth its salt would serve pasta not made in-house.
