Pembroke Townhouse, Dublin, Ireland

Pembroke Townhouse

Ballsbridge, Dublin, Ireland

A Georgian townhouse with a nicely judged modern extension. Pembroke Townhouse is a smart and comfortable combination of period and contemporary, beautifully located in prosperous south Dublin. Come here for an elegant but homely alternative to the big hotels – with superlative breakfasts to round off the deal.

Location

8 / 10

Though not central, Pembroke Townhouse is only 1.5 miles (2.5 km) from the city centre. It trades on an agreeable location at the centre of Dublin's prosperous embassy belt. Herbert Park, the Aviva stadium and the RDS exhibition centre are all within a 10-minute walk; Sandymount beach is a 15-minute walk. It has good transport connections: the Aircoach stop is a five-minute stroll, and Lansdowne Road DART (rail) station is a few minutes further on. You'll find a wide selection of good bars and restaurants in nearby Ballsbridge and Baggot Street.

Style & character

8 / 10

Traditional is – in part – the name of the game: behind the late-Georgian façade, you'll find handsome period furniture, a working fireplace in the hall – and a splendid staircase to add a touch of drama. This antique look does not, however, run throughout the house: the modern wing feels thoroughly up to date. Don't expect country-house dimensions: this is a townhouse, and is consequently more cosy than grand – not a bad thing.

Service & facilities

8 / 10

Service is efficient, with a welcome Irish touch of informality. The front desk (24-hour) offers information about local dining as well as city attractions, and members of staff are happy to organise tickets for tours. Facilities include room service, ample secure parking, laundry and dry-cleaning services, and a handsome drawing room complete with daily newspapers. Complimentary tea, coffee, cake and biscuits are available all day.

Rooms

8 / 10

The 48 bedrooms (including seven suites) are a combination of spacious and not so spacious. Most are nicely proportioned – the original Georgian rooms, with their high ceilings and sash windows, will always win the 'best dressed room'. The modern, rear-facing rooms, though smaller, have no traffic noise. All come with noticeably quality bedding, including firm mattresses, and you’ll see some original Irish art on the walls. Every room is en suite, though do note that some of these bathrooms are rather small. Hospitality trays are provided, or you can opt for complimentary tea and coffee served to your room.

Food & drink

9 / 10

Dining at Pembroke Townhouse is limited to breakfast, which is served until 11am – a nice touch. It's a delightful spread, featuring baked goods, sweet treats, hot chocolate, boiled egg and soldiers, and smoked salmon – plus the full Irish and other excellent options. In the evenings, there's a fine choice of restaurants locally: try nearby Miller's (50, Baggot Street Upper) for imaginative pizza and other Italian dishes.
