David Mundell has thrown his support behind Michael Gove in the next round of the Tory leadership contest in the hope his fellow Scot will hold Boris Johnson "to account".
The Scottish Secretary announced he would back Mr Gove, who was raised in Aberdeen, citing his "track record in government" and support for Scotland and the Union.
Sources close to Mr Mundell said he believed the Environment Secretary was best placed to give Mr Johnson a fright and scrutinise the flaws in his strategy for delivering Brexit.
They argued that the prominent Leave campaigner could much more effectively challenge Mr Johnson over Brexit if he reached the final two of the contest than any of the other candidates....
