It really is goodbye yellow brick road. As Elton John began the first European leg of his farewell tour, it became apparent that the 72-year-old singer-songwriter is serious about hanging up his ludicrous costumes, parking his piano and retiring from touring.

“This is my last show ever in Vienna,” he told a packed arena. And there was something so final about that “ever", delivered with a very familiar, warm, gap-toothed smile, that it lent an edge of poignancy to the whole show, a feeling that we had better savour every moment we have left with this extraordinary performer.
