Pass the baton! Meet the new Proms conductors shaking up classical music

If you want a bird’s-eye view of the conducting profession, you can’t do better than look at the Proms, where almost every night there’s someone different on the podium. Among them are some silver-haired maestri of the old school (including the great Bernard Haitink, who is soon to retire), but there’s a new wave shaking up the profession.

They know classical music has to embrace a new audience, and they know that collaboration and persuasion are better than tyrannising and tantrums – a fact surely not unconnected to the fact that many are women. I’ve been speaking to three new faces at this year’s Proms.
